Fingerprints are unique patterns that are found on the fingertips and have been a useful tool for identifying a person. Fingerprints are formed by grooves at the tip of the fingers. Although the reason these grooves are formed is not exactly known, we assume that this surface helps hold objects by creating friction between the finger and the object. These grooves for friction are not unique to humans and have been observed in some primary mammals.

Types of Fingerprints in crime scenes

1. Visible fingerprints

They are caused when the finger comes in contact with a visible substance such as blood, paint, ink or other visible material.

2. Plastic fingerprints

When the fingerprint is on a soft material such as wax or soap.

3. Hidden fingerprints

Imprints on any other surface with which the perpetrator’s fingers have come in contact.

Regardless of the purpose of their creation, fingerprints are used as a valuable tool by the police to identify individuals and in forensic science.
