The muscular system is an organ system consisting of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles. It permits movement of the body, maintains posture and circulates blood throughout the body. The muscular systems in vertebrates are controlled through the nervous system although some muscles (such as the cardiac muscle) can be completely autonomous. Together with the skeletal system, it forms the musculoskeletal system, which is responsible for movement of the human body.
Three distinct types of muscles: Smooth (non-striated) muscles in internal organs, cardiac or heart muscles and skeletal muscles.
Skeletal muscle
Skeletal muscles, like other striated muscles, are composed of myocytes. Upon stimulation by an action potential, skeletal muscles perform a coordinated contraction by shortening each sarcomere.
There are approximately 639 skeletal muscles in the human body.
Cardiac muscle
Heart muscles are distinct from skeletal muscles because the muscle fibers are laterally connected to each other. Furthermore, just as with smooth muscles, their movement is involuntary.
Smooth muscle
Smooth muscles are controlled directly by the autonomic nervous system and are involuntary, meaning that they are incapable of being moved by conscious thought.
Muscle tissue is the biological machine, with which chemical energy is converted into mechanical work, in the entire animal kingdom and of course in humans. Even the movements that take place inside the body without falling under the direct perception of the human being such as the movement of the heart for blood circulation, or the movements of the gastrointestinal tract or other internal organs of the body are performed by some kind of muscle tissue.
Muscle contraction is, in simple terms, the process by which a muscle during its contraction shortens during contraction and thus produces a mechanical work. The most important characteristic of muscle cells in terms of endurance is the presence of some units called mitochondria. Their primary function is to produce the energy needed for muscle contraction, which is why mitochondria are called muscle generators.
